What Is an Interactive Flat Panel? A Straight Answer

A distributor called me last month and asked straight up: “when I buy an interactive flat panel, what am I actually paying for?” He'd been quoted three different names — smart board, interactive display, flat panel — and three different prices, for what turned out to be the same machine.

Fair question. Let me answer it the way I answered him on the phone.

What It Actually Is

Strip away the jargon and an interactive flat panel is one thing: a big touchscreen that does the job of three pieces of equipment at once.

  • It's the display — a 4K screen the back row can actually read.
  • It's the whiteboard — you write on it with your finger or a stylus, and it never runs out of ink.
  • It's the computer — it runs Android apps on its own, and you cast your laptop to it in seconds.

That's the whole idea. One screen replaces the projector, the whiteboard, and the PC that used to sit on the desk.

What It Replaces (And Why People Switch)

Most schools and offices don't switch to a flat panel for fun. They switch because the old setup kept getting in the way:

  • The projector — bulbs dim over time, the room has to be dark, and someone always has to fiddle with the aim.
  • The whiteboard — markers dry out, and last week's notes ghost onto this week's lesson.
  • The computer — another box to secure, update, and reboot before every meeting.

One panel kills all three problems. Once people see it working, they stop asking “is it worth it?” and start asking “how soon can we get one?”

What To Check Before You Buy

Not all panels are equal. Four things separate a panel you'll use every day from one that ends up as an expensive TV stand:

  1. Touch. You want infrared with 40 touch points. That means a whole palm registers — not just a careful stylus tap. Kids and gloved hands both work.
  2. Glass and brightness. Anti-glare tempered glass at MOHS 7 hardness, so lights don't bounce off the screen. 350 cd/m² is right for a normal room — brighter isn't better, it just strains eyes.
  3. System. Android built in, so it turns on and works without plugging in a laptop. Plus an OPS slot, so you can slide in a Windows module later.
  4. Panel. A-grade BOE or CSOT panels. Cheap no-name screens drift in color after a year and cost more in the end.

What Size You Actually Need

RoomSize
Small meeting room, small classroom, tutoring55”–65”
Most classrooms and conference rooms75”–86”
Lecture halls, big training rooms, boardrooms98”–110”

A 75” or 86” covers almost everything. Go bigger only if the back row genuinely needs to read small text.

Where It Comes From Matters

We build these panels at Lonton — and the reason the specs above aren't marketing fluff is that they're what we ship.

  • 100,000+ m² factory, 15 production lines, 23,000 m² Class 10,000 cleanroom
  • Over 10,400 units a month, building panels since 2005
  • 55 R&D engineers, 13 patents, 650+ staff
  • ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001, CE, FCC, RoHS
  • Factory-direct, MOQ 5 units

Factory-direct matters because you're not paying a trading company to sit in the middle. You're buying from the people who actually build the thing — which is also who you call when something needs fixing.

FAQ

What is the difference between a smart board and an interactive flat panel?
Same machine, different label. “Smart board” was a brand name that became a generic term; “interactive flat panel” is what the industry calls it now.

What size interactive flat panel do I need?
75”–86” for most classrooms and meeting rooms. 55”–65” for small spaces, 98”+ for lecture halls.

What does factory-direct actually mean?
You're buying from the manufacturer, not a middleman. Fewer layers, lower price, one point of contact for support.

What's the minimum order?
5 units. Low enough to test the panel in one classroom or meeting room before a bigger rollout.
