For most meeting rooms, classrooms, and training spaces, yes — an interactive flat panel is better than a projector. But the answer depends on what "better" means to you.
If you're comparing image quality, an interactive flat panel wins easily. Projectors lose brightness over time as the lamp ages, wash out in rooms with natural light, and require a dark room for the best image. An interactive flat panel uses an LED backlight that stays bright for years and works fine with the blinds open. The 4K resolution on a 65-inch or 75-inch panel looks sharp from any distance, while a projector image at the same size often shows visible pixelation.
For collaboration, the gap is even wider. A projector displays content. An interactive flat panel lets you interact with it — annotate over presentations, open a whiteboard and sketch ideas, split the screen between a video call and a document. That kind of real-time collaboration simply doesn't happen with a projector and a separate whiteboard.
For total cost over time, the interactive flat panel also comes out ahead. A projector needs lamp replacements every two to three years at a few hundred dollars each, plus filter cleaning and calibration. An interactive flat panel has no lamp, no filter, and essentially no maintenance beyond occasionally wiping the screen. The initial purchase price of a projector setup is lower, but by year three or four, the IFP costs less overall.
Where projectors still make sense: very large venues like auditoriums, where you need an image far larger than a standard flat panel. For a 200-seat hall, a projector is still the better tool. But for standard meeting rooms and classrooms, the interactive flat panel is the clear winner.
