Interactive Flat Panel Display Buying Guide for Schools & Businesses
You have the budget approved. Now you are staring at a list of 30 different interactive flat panel models, with specs that all look the same and prices that vary by thousands of dollars. Easy to get wrong. Expensive to fix later.
I have spent 19 years manufacturing these panels. This guide covers what actually matters — not the marketing bullet points — so you can buy the right panel the first time.
1. Screen Size: Bigger Is Not Always Better
The most common mistake is buying the biggest panel the budget allows. A 98-inch panel in a 15-person meeting room is uncomfortable — people in the front row crane their necks.
Rule of thumb:

| Standard classroom / meeting room (10–25 people) | 75" or 86" |
| Large lecture hall / training center (30+ people) | 86" or 98" |
If your rooms vary in size, do not buy one size for all of them. A supplier that offers the full range — 55" through 98", plus custom sizes — saves you from managing multiple vendors.

2. Touch Technology: Infrared vs. Capacitive
This is where specs get confusing. Two main technologies:
Infrared (IR) touch — A frame of infrared LEDs around the bezel detects touch by breaking light beams. This is what 90% of interactive flat panels use. It works with fingers, styluses, and gloved hands. Accuracy is typically under 2mm. It is reliable and cost-effective.
Capacitive touch — Same technology as your phone screen. Smoother feel, supports more simultaneous touch points. But it is more expensive, and thick gloves do not register.
For education and most business use, IR touch is the practical choice. We use 40-point infrared touch across our product line — precise enough for handwriting and drawing, tough enough for daily classroom use.
3. Built-in Operating System: Android, Windows, or Both?
Most interactive flat panels run Android as the built-in OS, with an OPS (Open Pluggable Specification) slot to add a Windows module.
Android built-in — Comes with the panel. Runs annotation software, a web browser, and basic apps. No extra cost. Good enough for whiteboarding and screen sharing.
OPS Windows module — A slide-in PC that turns the panel into a full Windows computer. Runs all your existing software — Office, CAD, specialized education tools. It costs extra, but if your team needs Windows, you need the OPS slot.
Make sure the panel has an OPS slot even if you do not buy the Windows module today. You cannot add it later if the slot is not there.
4. Connectivity: What Ports Actually Get Used
Sales sheets list 15 ports. In the real world, you use four:
- HDMI In — Connect a laptop directly. Get at least two. One for the presenter, one for a backup device.
- USB Touch — Transmits touch data back to the connected computer. Without this, the panel is just a monitor.
- USB Ports — For flash drives. Front-facing USB is much more convenient than reaching around the back.
- LAN / WiFi — For software updates and cloud access. WiFi 6 support matters if your network is modern.
Everything else — VGA, AV, SPDIF — is nice to have, but you will probably never touch them.
5. Sourcing: Retail vs. Direct from Manufacturer
If you are buying 2 panels for your office, buy retail. If you are a distributor, a school district, or a corporate buyer ordering 50 or 500 panels, you need a manufacturing partner.
