FOB vs CIF: What's the Difference for Interactive Flat Panel Buyers?
A buyer we're working with in Bangladesh asked us to quote "FOB Shenzhen, because I have my own freight forwarder in Guangzhou." He knew exactly what he wanted and why — and if you're importing interactive flat panels for the first time, these three letters are the difference between a clean shipment and a surprise bill at the port.
This guide explains FOB vs CIF in plain terms, what each one covers, and which one you should ask for when you buy panels from a Chinese factory.
FOB and CIF in Plain Terms
FOB (Free On Board) means the seller pays everything up to the moment the goods are loaded on the vessel at the origin port — factory, inland trucking to the port, export clearance, and loading. From there, freight, insurance, and everything at your destination port is yours.
CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) means the seller also pays the ocean freight and basic insurance to your destination port. It sounds more convenient — one number covers the trip — but you give up control of who moves your cargo and what insurance actually covers.
Which One Gives You More Control?
Here's the part most first-time buyers miss: with CIF, the seller chooses the freight forwarder and the insurance. With FOB, you choose your own forwarder — and that matters for three reasons.
- You control the cost. A forwarder you trust will often beat the seller's bundled freight number.
- You control the paperwork. Your forwarder works for you, not for the seller, when something goes wrong at the port.
- You control the timing. You can see exactly where your container is instead of waiting for the seller to relay updates.
The Bangladesh buyer had it right: if you have a forwarder you trust, ask for FOB. If you're new to importing and want the simplest possible first shipment, CIF is fine — just know you're paying a convenience premium for it.
How Lonton Ships
We ship FOB Shenzhen by default, and we're happy to quote CIF to your port if you'd rather have us handle the freight. Either way, we itemize the panel price separately from the freight so you always see what the boards cost and what the shipping costs.
Our panels ship from a 100,000+ m² facility with 15 production lines, packed and palletized for sea freight — 4K UHD, 40-point infrared touch, Android 15 with OPS, built on BOE and CSOT panels.
Get a Quote in Both Terms
Tell us your port and quantity, and we'll send you the panel price plus both an FOB and a CIF number so you can compare. It takes the guesswork out of the decision.
